New Delhi: The first day of Sawan 2026 falls on Thursday, 30 July 2026, in North India. The sacred month of Shravan is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and many devotees begin it by offering prayers, performing Jalabhishek, and seeking Mahadev’s blessings. According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping Lord Shiva with devotion on the first day of Sawan is believed to bring peace, prosperity, good health, and spiritual growth throughout the holy month.
If you’re planning to begin Shravan with faith, here’s a simple step-by-step guide to worship Lord Shiva on the first day of Sawan.
Begin your day during Brahma Muhurta or early in the morning. Take a bath and, if possible, add a few drops of Gangajal to the water. Wear clean, light-coloured clothes before starting your prayers.
Clean the temple or prayer space at home and place a Shivling or an idol of Lord Shiva on a clean platform. Light a diya and incense sticks to create a peaceful atmosphere for worship.
Offer pure water or Gangajal to the Shivling. Many devotees also perform Panchamrit Abhishek using milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar, following their family tradition.
While offering Jal, chant “Om Namah Shivaya” or the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra with devotion.
After the Abhishek, offer Bel Patra, white flowers, sandalwood paste, Dhatura, Bhang, fruits, and seasonal flowers. Ensure the Bel Patra is fresh and offered with faith.
Remember that Lord Shiva values sincere devotion more than expensive offerings.
Spend a few minutes chanting Shiva mantras or reading spiritual texts such as the Shiva Chalisa, Rudrashtakam, or passages from the Shiva Purana. Even a short prayer offered with complete concentration is considered highly auspicious.
Many devotees begin their Shravan Somwar Vrat or follow a sattvic lifestyle from the first day of Sawan. Eating simple vegetarian food and avoiding alcohol, tobacco, onion, and garlic is a common practice during this sacred month.
If possible, visit a nearby Shiva temple to offer prayers. Many temples organise Rudrabhishek and special Sawan pujas on the first day, allowing devotees to seek Lord Shiva’s blessings in a spiritually uplifting atmosphere.
End your worship by praying for wisdom, good health, peace, and happiness for yourself and your family. You can also donate food, clothes, or other essentials to those in need, as charity is considered highly meritorious during Shravan.
The first day of Sawan is not about performing elaborate rituals but about beginning the holy month with faith and a pure heart. Whether you perform Jalabhishek at home, visit a Shiva temple, chant Om Namah Shivaya, or simply spend a few quiet moments in prayer, your sincere devotion is believed to be the greatest offering to Mahadev. Starting Sawan with humility and gratitude is said to invite Lord Shiva’s blessings throughout the sacred month.
