Rising fan favourite and young prospects among the players placed in the shop window

Michael Carrick has informed four members of his Manchester United squad that they are surplus to requirements ahead of the new season.

Carrick, who agreed to become United’s permanent head coach at the end of last season, has had a hectic start to the transfer window as he looks to reshape his midfield, bringing in Chelsea’s Andrey Santos and Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans for around £80m.

He is also expected to add at least one more midfielder in this window, while defensive reinforcements are still required, but the focus has now shifted to departures.

According to reports in the Daily Mail, Carrick has now told four players in his squad to look for a new club because they will not be needed this season: Radek Vítek, Harry Amass, Dan Gore and Toby Collyer.

It is disappointing news for Amass, who spent half of last season on loan at Norwich and had caught the eye in pre-season games against Wrexham and Rosenborg, playing 45 minutes in each.

He has since been placed in the shop window, with the club open to allowing him to leave either on loan or on a permanent transfer.

Meanwhile, the 21-year-old midfielder Gore made 34 league appearances on loan at Rotherham last season, but Carrick has told him he will not be part of the first team in the coming campaign, with the Under-21s his best chance of getting minutes.

Collyer, 22, received the same message despite helping Hull City earn promotion last season.

The news will not have been a shock for Czech goalkeeper Vitek, though, after he asked to leave the club in an interview following the Wrexham friendly, in which he played 45 minutes.

Speaking after the final whistle, he told reporters that he hoped to become the club’s No1 one day, but in the short term he is ready to move on elsewhere: “At the moment I am still here, but we will see, I hope (I can leave). I hope there will be some interest. You will know when things are more concrete.

“I am ready to go for both (a loan or permanent sale), to be fair. Depends what the club wants, depends on the options, we’ll see.”

The Czech has been made available for sale or a loan with an obligation to buy. His prospects of playing a first-team role this season were reduced earlier in the window after the arrival of Karl Darlow and Tom Heaton’s decision to sign a new contract.
