Glasgow [Scotland], July 29: Indian long-distance runner Gulveer Singh has made history by becoming the first Indian to win a medal in the men's 10,000m event at the Commonwealth Games, securing a silver medal during the 2026 edition held in Glasgow on Tuesday night.
With a remarkable time of 27:49.78, Gulveer executed a well-planned race strategy, finishing strong with an impressive sprint in the final lap to take second place, just behind Australia's Ky Robinson. David Mullarkey from the Isle of Man took home the bronze, while traditional powerhouses in distance running, Kenya and Uganda, surprisingly missed out on the podium, as reported by ESPN.
This silver medal marks a significant milestone for India, ending a long-standing drought in one of the most challenging track events at the Commonwealth Games. Prior to Gulveer's achievement, no Indian athlete had ever reached the podium in the men's 10,000m event.
Despite the rainy weather in Glasgow, Gulveer maintained his composure throughout the race, staying with the leading group without wasting energy. As the final lap approached, he was in third place but unleashed a powerful finishing kick to surpass one competitor and secure the historic silver medal.
This accomplishment adds to the accolades of the national record holder, who has established himself as India's top long-distance runner in recent years.
Gulveer's silver was part of a successful day for India, which also saw weightlifter Harjinder Kaur achieve a personal best in the women's 69kg category, earning another silver medal.
Harjinder lifted a total of 227kg (101kg in snatch and 126kg in clean and jerk), finishing second to Canada's Charlotte Simoneau, who won gold with a total of 235kg. Harjinder also set a new Commonwealth Games snatch record twice during the event, marking her second consecutive medal at the Commonwealth Games after winning bronze in Birmingham 2022.
With Gulveer's historic finish, India's overall medal tally at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games has reached 12, comprising two golds, seven silvers, and three bronzes.
The current medalists for India include Mirabai Chanu (gold, weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (gold, women's shot put F57), Rishikanta Singh (silver, weightlifting), Muthupandi Raja (silver, weightlifting), Gyaneshwari Yadav (silver, weightlifting), Sarvesh Kushare (silver, men's high jump), Gulveer Singh (silver, men's 10,000m), Harjinder Kaur (silver, weightlifting), Valluri Ajaya Babu (silver, weightlifting), Bindyarani Devi (bronze, weightlifting), Shilpa K.
