Raipur, 28 July 2026. Chhattisgarh Government's Spawn Promotion Scheme is becoming an effective means of increasing income for fish farmers living in rural and tribal areas. Manki Baghel, a woman farmer of village Seoni under Bastar development block of Bastar district, has earned an additional income of Rs 15 thousand in just two months by taking advantage of this scheme. Now his family is preparing to expand the scope of fingerling production.

How is this scheme changing the lives of people in Chhattisgarh?

Under this scheme of the Fisheries Department, high quality fish seeds (spawn), nursery nets and other necessary resources are provided free of cost to the farmers. Along with this, practical training is also given in pond management, spawn culture, maintaining water quality and scientific fisheries, so that farmers can achieve better production.
In the month of May, the department provided about 25 thousand spawns of mixed species to Manki Baghel. Besides, to maintain the fertility of the pond, cake cake was also given as fertilizer and fish feed. The family reared the spawn scientifically in two ponds located in their one acre area. Regular care and proper management resulted in production of high quality fish fingers in a short period of time.
To safely deliver the prepared fish seeds to the market, the department also provided necessary materials like oxygen cylinders, polythene bags, sacks and nets free of cost. This also made marketing easier for the farmers.
According to Sukhlal Baghel, nephew of Manki Baghel, so far about 30 kg of fish fingers have been sold at the rate of Rs 500 per kg, from which the family has earned an income of Rs 15 thousand. At present, about 50 kg of fingerlings are ready in the pond, the sale of which is expected to yield good income in future also. He says that fingerling production is proving to be more profitable than traditional fish farming.
After this success achieved by farming along with fisheries, the family has decided to expand fingerling production next year. At present the Baghel family cultivates paddy on 7 acres and maize and vegetables on 2 acres of land in Rabi season. Now fishing is also becoming a strong base of their income.
