When screenshots surfaced, many users claimed that a data leak at Anthropic had caused these chats to become publicly available on Google. In reality, this is not an issue of a data leak or hack. Claude's private chats remain private. The chats appearing on Google belong to users who utilized Claude's "public share" feature. This feature converts chats into a publicly accessible webpage.

Where did it all start?

Users on Reddit reported that Claude chats could be accessed by entering simple queries into Google Search. While some people linked it to a data leak—citing a privacy failure—others noted that the chats had been made public via the share feature. Many users posted screenshots on X (formerly Twitter), describing it as a privacy issue, which sparked a lengthy debate.

How did Claude conversations end up on Google Search?

Since this isn't a data leak, the question arises: how exactly did these chats get indexed by Google Search? In fact, when a user clicks "Share" while using Claude, the chatbot creates a public webpage for that conversation. Anyone can open this page and read the chat. The problem arose when these webpages began appearing in Google Search results, making it easy for others to read other users' conversations. Initially, it was reported that Anthropic had simply forgotten to add a 'noindex' tag to the webpage; however, further analysis revealed that Anthropic had actually blocked search engines from crawling its shared pages. While this prevented search engines like Google from reading the actual chat content on the page, it did not stop the page's URL from being indexed. Consequently, many of these webpages began appearing in search results on Google and Bing, allowing anyone to click on them and read the shared chats.

Is this a cause for concern?

If you are a Claude user who utilizes the sharing feature, this is certainly a concern; however, if you have never used this feature, there is no need to worry. If you have used the feature in the past and wish to delete your chats now, Anthropic has provided a method to do so. Simply navigate to the chatbot's settings and open the 'Privacy' section. There, you will find an option for 'Shared Chats,' which allows you to review or remove them.

What kind of information was contained in the chats appearing on Google?

According to reports, the indexed webpages contained information such as crypto wallet details, access credentials, resumes, company documents, legal queries, and general conversations. Following the public outcry, these webpages began to gradually disappear from Google Search results, and they are now being removed from Bing and other search engines as well. It is important to note that removal from Google Search does not disable the actual links to the webpages; users who already possess the URLs can still access them at any time.

A similar incident occurred with OpenAI

Anthropic is not the first company to face an incident of this nature. Last year, OpenAI also rolled out an experimental feature that allowed users to make their shared conversations discoverable on search engines. However, the company immediately disabled the feature after these chats began appearing in Google Search results.
