Leeds United are close to striking an agreement with Manchester City to sign goalkeeper James Trafford, according to The Athletic.

The West Yorkshire club will pay an initial guaranteed fee of £40 million plus add-ons, and are now putting the final touches on the Trafford deal.

This transfer is a strong declaration of intent from Leeds United, who have been searching for a long-term answer in goal after the exits of Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier.

Trafford’s quick progress through the English game has turned him into one of the most highly rated young goalkeepers in the country.

A graduate of Manchester City’s academy, Trafford has earned a reputation as a commanding figure between the posts. His shot-stopping, calmness under pressure, and outstanding distribution make him a modern, all-round goalkeeper ideally suited to the demands of present-day English football.

Trafford’s excellent displays at youth international level, especially during England’s success at the UEFA European Under-21 Championship, where he recorded six straight clean sheets, further strengthened his standing as a future senior England star.

Having already received a call-up to the senior England squad, Trafford offers a mix of proven quality and major potential to Elland Road.

For Manchester City, the sale brings another significant financial return on one of their academy graduates, highlighting both the club’s ability to develop elite players and Trafford’s rising market value. For Leeds, though, signing Trafford is being viewed as a key part of their squad rebuild.

With the deal now nearing completion, Trafford is expected to have a medical in the next few days, giving Leeds United their signing of the summer window.
