Chelsea are in active talks to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The West London club is considering a surprise move to bring the 35-year-old veteran striker to Stamford Bridge, with the aim of adding proven Premier League experience to their attacking line.
Fabrizio Romano shared the unexpected transfer update on X, saying that newly appointed Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has clearly approved the move for the former England international.
“Xabi Alonso has approved Danny Welbeck as new experienced option upfront for Chelsea. Chelsea in active talks to explore this possibility from Brighton.”
Alonso is said to value Welbeck’s tactical intelligence, press resistance, and leadership inside the dressing room, as Chelsea try to strike the right balance between a young, energetic squad and proven top-flight experience.
Welbeck comes into this after his best individual goalscoring season, having scored 14 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions for the Seagulls.
After six successful seasons on the South Coast, where he scored 51 goals and provided 18 assists in more than 200 appearances, Brighton are reportedly willing to let Welbeck move if both clubs can agree on suitable terms.
Welbeck’s possible arrival at Stamford Bridge is expected to spark changes in Chelsea’s crowded attacking department.
With Joao Pedro already in the squad, the West London side are reportedly open to moving on 23-year-old forward Liam Delap to create space for Welbeck.
Delap, who joined Chelsea as a promising talent, has seen his starting chances restricted under the new tactical system.
Several Premier League and European clubs have already asked about Delap’s availability, both on loan and on a permanent basis.
At the same time, Nicolas Jackson’s future at the club is also still uncertain.
Chelsea’s board is now focused on securing Welbeck’s signing before making any final decisions on outgoing players ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
