Chelsea are moving towards a deal to sign Brentford midfielder Jordan Henderson, with Xabi Alonso continuing to reshape his squad through the addition of experienced players.
As reported by The Athletic, the Blues have become the leading contenders for the former Liverpool captain, even though a number of other Premier League clubs are also interested.
Brentford are said to be ready to let Henderson leave on a free transfer, even though he still has one year left on his contract.
Chelsea’s approach marks a clear change in their recent transfer policy.
After several transfer windows in which the focus was mainly on young players with long-term potential, the club have increasingly turned to seasoned Premier League names this summer.
Henderson was in the England squad at the World Cup, although his tournament ended early after he suffered a broken during after-match celebrations.
Henderson stayed with the squad as England reached the semi-finals before being knocked out.
He joined Brentford as a free agent from Ajax last summer and soon became a key player under manager Keith Andrews.
He started 22 Premier League matches last season and also made 10 more appearances from the bench, offering balance and leadership both on and off the pitch.
Before that, Henderson spent two seasons with Ajax after leaving Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq.
Chelsea have already made major changes under Alonso.
The signings of Morgan Rogers and Marco Palestra have added more strength to the squad, while Andrey Santos’ move to Manchester United has opened up extra space in midfield.
The Blues have also been linked with experienced names such as Danny Welbeck and John Stones as they seek to bring more leadership into a relatively young dressing room.
