The backlash also extended to her Facebook and YouTube accounts, while criticism on social media prompted her to disable comments on the original Instagram post.
The actor, who had approximately 2.7 million Instagram followers when she shared the statement on July 24, now has around 2.4 million followers, according to figures visible on her profile.

Pearle Maaney’s post, which appealed for peace and student safety during the protests, triggered mixed reactions online. While some users appreciated her call for non-violence, others criticised her remarks, leading to a sharp decline in her social media following.

In her Instagram statement, Pearle described the situation as “painful” and “heartbreaking,” urging students to prioritise their safety.
She wrote that while students deserve a fair and transparent education system, the movement’s original purpose should remain the central focus.
Pearle also expressed hope that the protests would continue to highlight students’ concerns without losing sight of their primary objective.

Following the criticism, Pearle shared Instagram Stories suggesting that her post had made many people uncomfortable. She also appeared to criticise a “failed filmmaker” without naming anyone.
The remarks were widely interpreted as referring to filmmaker Sibi Malayil.

Sibi Malayil’s son, Joe Malayil, responded through Instagram Stories, defending his father and criticising Pearle’s comments.
He alleged that Pearle had made the issue personal and challenged her remarks, adding another dimension to the online controversy.
