Improper use of headphones can cause problems like ear pain, persistent ringing sound (tinnitus), ear infections and hearing loss. However, these risks can be reduced to a great extent by adopting some simple precautions.
Keep these things in mind while using headphones
always limit volume
The biggest mistake is listening to headphones at too loud a volume. Experts often recommend following the 60/60 rule, that is, listen at about 60% of maximum volume and do not use headphones for more than 60 minutes at a stretch. Loud noise can damage the sensitive hair cells inside the ears, which do not regenerate.
Do not wear headphones for long hours continuously
If you have to use headphones for work or study for a long time, then definitely take breaks in between. Keep a gap of at least 5 to 10 minutes after every 45 to 60 minutes. This provides relief to the ears and reduces the pressure on hearing ability.
Take full care of cleanliness
Dust, sweat, and bacteria can accumulate on earbuds and headphones, increasing the risk of ear infections. So clean them regularly and avoid sharing with any other person. Dirty earbuds can damage the ear skin and ear canal.
Choose the right fitting headphones
Headphones that are too loose or too tight can put unnecessary pressure on the ears. Using good quality noise-canceling headphones reduces external noise, eliminating the need to increase the volume. This improves ear protection.
Never ignore these symptoms
If you feel ringing sound, pain, difficulty in hearing or heaviness in the ears after using headphones, then do not ignore it considering it as normal. If such symptoms persist for a long time, it is important to consult an ENT specialist. Serious damage can be avoided by getting checked in time.
Do every headphone cause harm?
It is not that using headphones is always harmful. The problem occurs when they are used continuously at high volume and for a long time. You can better protect your ear health by adopting habits like safe volume, limited time and regular breaks.
