Samira Vishwas | July 23, 2026 6:24 AM CST

The 23rd edition of the Commonwealth Games (CWG) is starting from July 23, which is being hosted by the city of Glasgow, Scotland. To keep the costs low, only 10 events have been kept in this year’s Commonwealth Games. Sports like badminton, hockey, wrestling, shooting, cricket and table tennis, in which India is strong, have been excluded. This will be the smallest Commonwealth Games since 1994. Events will be held at only 4 venues in Glasgow, in which around 3000 players from 74 countries will try for medals.

India has sent a team of 125 players. Able-bodied Indian athletes will challenge for medals in boxing, athletics, weightlifting, judo, artistic gymnastics, track cycling, lawn bowls and swimming. No ordinary Indian athlete will participate in the netball and 3×3 basketball events. Indian para players will compete to win medals in 3×3 wheelchair basketball, para athletics, para powerlifting, para swimming and para track cycling.

Where will the opening ceremony take place?

The opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games 2026 will take place on 23 July at the indoor arena Owo Hydro. The competition will start from the next day. India’s flag and baton bearers in Glasgow are Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain.

Why is CWG 2026 taking place in Glasgow?

The budget of CWG 2026 being held in Glasgow is around £ 160 million, which is 60 percent less than the previous edition held in Birmingham in 2022.
