Sir Garfield Sobers, former West Indies captain and considered one of the world’s best all-rounders, died on Friday at the age of 89. His son Daniel Sobers confirmed the sad news. The emotional thing is that he was about to celebrate his 90th birthday in just ten days. Cricket fans and former players around the world have expressed deep grief over his demise. Sir Sobers played 93 Test matches in his illustrious international career from 1954 to 1974 and scored 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78. He has 26 centuries and 30 half-centuries in his name. Even in bowling, he established himself as a complete all-rounder by taking 235 wickets.

The name of Sir Garfield Sobers will always be remembered for the historic feat which changed the history of cricket. In the year 1968, he created a new history by hitting six sixes in six consecutive balls in one over of first-class cricket. He became the first batsman in the world to do so. Not only this, in the year 1958, he made the highest individual score in Test cricket by playing a historic inning of 365 runs unbeaten against Pakistan. This world record remained intact for 36 years, which was later broken by Brian Lara. His batting, bowling and leadership on the field have forever immortalized him in the list of the greatest players in cricket history.

Sobers, who played first-class cricket for Barbados at the age of just 16, made it to the West Indies Test team the very next year.
