Israil Gurung, a former Indian football player, praised French captain Kylian Mbappe for surpassing Lionel Messi as the all-time leading goal-scorer in FIFA World Cup history. He emphasized that to maintain such remarkable success, Mbappe must continue making sacrifices similar to those that transformed Cristiano Ronaldo and Messi into global icons over the past two decades.

Mbappe's impressive World Cup journey continued during the bronze medal match against England. Despite his team's struggle, trailing 0-4 at halftime, Mbappe's two goals helped him break Messi's record of 21 goals, bringing his total to 22. This performance also marked his 10 goals in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, placing him ahead of Messi, who has scored eight.

Having won the World Cup in his debut in 2018 and scoring in the final against Croatia, as well as netting a hat-trick in the 2022 final against Argentina, Mbappe has established himself as one of the greatest in World Cup history. He is now in contention for the prestigious 'Golden Boot' for the most goals in the tournament and possibly the 'Golden Ball' for the best player, although Messi's performance against Spain could challenge his chances.

In an interview, Gurung remarked on Mbappe's potential, stating, "He has performed exceptionally well for France. Being young, he has many years ahead. While Messi continues to surprise, we must wait to see if Mbappe can secure the Golden Boot. His future looks bright for breaking records."

Gurung also drew parallels between Mbappe and Brazilian legend Ronaldo, noting that achieving such records depends on the sacrifices a player is willing to make to stay fit and healthy.

In the bronze medal match, England took an early lead, scoring four goals in the first half, with Declan Rice, Ezri Konsa, and Bukayo Saka contributing to the scoreline. This marked the first time France conceded four goals in a single half of a World Cup match.

However, the second half saw a remarkable comeback from France, initiated by Mbappe's goal. Despite their efforts, England regained control, with Saka completing his hat-trick through a late penalty. France's Ousmane Dembele scored in stoppage time, but Jude Bellingham sealed England's 6-4 victory, securing the bronze medal.
