Spain defender Marc Cucurella has made a surprising announcement ahead of the FIFA World Cup final against Argentina, stating that he will retire from international football if Spain emerge as champions. The Chelsea full-back believes that securing both the European Championship and the World Cup would fulfil his ambitions with La Roja, while also promising a unique tribute to head coach Luis de la Fuente.
Cucurella sets a retirement goal before the final
Cucurella revealed that he intends to end his international career should Spain defeat Argentina in the World Cup final. The 27-year-old has featured in every minute of Spain’s campaign in North America, playing a crucial role in their run to the final. According to him, lifting the trophy would represent the ultimate achievement for his country, leaving nothing more to strive for on the international stage.
Having already claimed the 2024 European Championship title, Cucurella feels that winning the World Cup would complete a dream double. The defender has been one of the most consistent performers under De la Fuente, anchoring Spain’s defence throughout the tournament. In addition to his retirement plan, Cucurella has also promised to get a tattoo dedicated to his manager if Spain are crowned world champions.
Cucurella explains his decision
In an interview with L'Equipe, Cucurella shared the reasoning behind his decision to step away from the national team if Spain lift the World Cup trophy. He said that winning both the Euros and the World Cup would be the perfect conclusion to his international journey.
“If we win the World Cup, I’ll call Luis the next day and tell him not to count on me anymore, that I’m retiring from the national team,” Cucurella said. “With a European Championship and a World Cup, I can’t do any better.”
Tattoo tribute for De la Fuente
Beyond his retirement declaration, Cucurella has also made another bold promise. Known for his distinctive hairstyle and lively personality, the defender has pledged to get a tattoo in honour of Luis de la Fuente if Spain capture the World Cup title. Should La Roja overcome the defending champions, the 27-year-old plans to head straight to a tattoo studio for a special design.
During an interview with Fox Sports, Cucurella confirmed: “I would get a little tattoo of Spain manager Luis de la Fuente’s face on my bicep if we were to win the World Cup.”
One final challenge against Argentina
Spain now prepare to face reigning champions Argentina in what promises to be a thrilling World Cup final. For Cucurella, the match could serve as his farewell appearance in a Spain shirt if he follows through on his retirement vow. Whether he ultimately keeps his word remains uncertain, but his immediate focus is on helping Spain contain Argentina’s attack and achieve football’s most coveted prize.
