Barcelona sporting director Deco has confessed that he is torn by divided loyalties ahead of Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina. The former midfield maestro has travelled to New York for the grand showdown, which will see club legend Lionel Messi facing off against several of Barcelona’s current stars.
Showpiece clash on the horizon
Deco has arrived in New York to witness the much-awaited World Cup final at the New York New Jersey Stadium, where Spain and Argentina will battle for global supremacy. The encounter holds special significance for the Barcelona official, as it features both Messi and a host of current Blaugrana players competing on opposing sides.
Spain earned their place in the final after defeating France and extending their unbeaten streak to 17 matches. Meanwhile, Argentina entered the contest riding a 14-game winning run, following their victory over England.
‘It’s a difficult choice’
In an interview with Cope, Deco admitted that he is struggling to decide whom to support, given his deep connections with both teams. The former Portugal international remarked, “I always back my own people, but my people are everywhere.”
He continued, “Leo will always be one of us. It’s really hard to pick a side. On one hand, there’s Leo, who’s not just a friend but someone who has given everything to us as Barcelona fans and football lovers. He’s a legend. What he’s doing is simply amazing.”
“On the other hand, there are our boys — the Barca lads. It’s tough, really tough. That’s why we’ll be watching everything closely tomorrow. I truly believe it’s going to be a spectacular final.”
Giants ready for the showdown
The Barcelona executive also shared his analysis of both teams’ tactical strength and resilience throughout the tournament in the United States. He said, “Spain, after their semi-final, are playing very well. Argentina are winning matches, and Leo is performing brilliantly. That’s why I believe it will be a great final. Both sides have tremendous players. Spain have been consistent, while Argentina have faced challenges in some games, but in the end, it’s all about the team’s heart.”
Transfer focus resumes after the final
Once the World Cup concludes, Deco will return to Catalonia to resume his duties in Barcelona’s summer transfer operations. The La Liga outfit are expected to officially announce the signing of winger Karim Adeyemi next week to reinforce their attacking options. In addition, the club’s management will continue their efforts to secure Argentina forward Julian Alvarez as part of their long-term plans.
