Like the entire world, Indrajith has been mesmerised by the viral photoshoot of Messi with a baby Lamine Yamal. “How incredible is that? It’s like a movie story!” says the actor, who is a sports enthusiast.
He’ll be rooting for Argentina in its finals against Spain. “I have a definite affinity to the Argentina team. I was a huge Maradona fan and am a bigger Messi fan. He’s a blessed child of football. In the England match, I felt that two very different Messis were playing; in the second half, he was in another gear. And also, the English team fell back and got into a defensive mode, instead of going for the next goal. That doesn’t work with a team like Argentina, with strong forwards.”
But he feels that Argentina has its work cut out as “Spain is a technically brilliant team and their strength is that they play as a team - in passing and defending - rather than focussing on a single star”. “What an amazing game they played against France. They left nothing to chance with their defense and with how technically strong they were. As a team, Spain is stronger than Argentina, but the latter has the Messi factor and we can’t predict how that will play out on a day,” he says.
Despite a hectic shoot schedule in Palakkad and the odd hours of the matches, Indrajith Sukumaran has been intent on catching the World Cup. “I organised my schedule to get some shut eye and wake up around midnight to watch the matches, then go back to sleep before the next shoot schedule starts,” he says.
The actor feels that the Messi magic is a real thing. “When the Messi magic happens - in the way he finds gaps, the precision of his passes, being able to judge in the fraction of a second - no team or player can do anything. Even if he can produce five minutes of this magic against Spain, Argentina stands a chance.”
