NEET 2026: The NEET UG results have been declared. Out of the approximately 20 lakh students who appeared for the exam, 11.21 lakh have qualified. After clearing this challenging exam, every student dreams of pursuing an MBBS degree from a government medical college. However, securing admission to a government medical college can be difficult with a lower score or rank, as priority is given to candidates with higher ranks. If your score is slightly lower, there is no need to be disheartened; the 'Stray Vacancy Round' of NEET counseling could help you realize your dreams. This round can prove to be a golden opportunity. Let us understand what this round entails and how it can help you secure a seat in a government college despite having lower marks.
What is the Stray Vacancy Round?
NEET counseling takes place in stages: Round 1, Round 2, the Mop-up Round, and finally, the Stray Vacancy Round.
The Stray Vacancy Round is conducted to fill seats that remain vacant in government or private medical colleges even after the completion of the first three rounds. Often, a student is allotted a seat but does not complete the admission process—perhaps due to missing documents or opting for admission at another college—leaving the seat vacant.
At this stage, the remaining candidates are those who had slightly lower scores. Seats are then allotted to these students based on merit. Consequently, the cut-off for the Stray Vacancy Round often drops significantly below expectations, allowing students with lower ranks to fulfill their dream of studying at their preferred college.
Keep these important points in mind:
No New Registration
In most cases, fresh registration is not permitted for this round. Only those who registered earlier but did not secure a seat are eligible to participate. Forgoing the seat could prove costly.
If you are allotted a seat in this round, you must accept admission; otherwise, a penalty may be imposed for forfeiting the seat.
