A ration card is highly significant for the common person. It not only grants access to government-subsidized rations but also serves as proof of identity and address. While a ration card typically covers the entire family, it is possible to obtain a separate one; however, specific conditions apply. An individual who is part of a family cannot simply get a separate ration card at will; they must meet certain criteria after separating from the family unit to qualify for one.
**Eligibility criteria for obtaining a separate ration card:**
1. **Upon marriage:** After marriage, when a wife joins her husband's household, her name can be removed from her parental family's ration card and added to a new, independent ration card shared with her husband.
2. **Separate kitchen/household:**
If an individual lives in the same house as their family but maintains a completely separate kitchen and manages their own earnings and meals, they can apply for a separate ration card for themselves, their spouse, and their children. However, this requires verification to prove that the two households maintain separate living expenses.
3. **Employment in another city:**
If a person moves to another city for work and resides there permanently, they can have their name removed from their original ration card and obtain a new, separate ration card at their current address.
**Options for unmarried individuals:**
Unmarried individuals can also obtain a ration card, though different conditions apply. An unmarried man or woman who is self-reliant, has lived at their current residence for at least one year, and maintains a separate kitchen can apply for a ration card as a single-member household. However, unmarried individuals living under the same roof and sharing the same kitchen as their parents are not eligible for a separate ration card.
**How to apply for a separate ration card:**
To obtain a separate ration card, one must first secure a certificate confirming the removal of their name from the existing ration card (or a surrender certificate). Subsequently, an online application must be submitted via the Food Department's portal. Along with the application, you must submit your Aadhaar card, proof of new address, income certificate, and a certificate confirming the removal of your name from the old card. Subsequently, an inspector from the Food Department will conduct a physical verification at your address. The new card will be issued after the verification process is complete.
