The greatest all-rounder in sports history and former West Indies captain Sir Garfield Sobers has died at his home in Barbados at the age of 89. Sir Garfield Sobers, fondly called ‘Gary Sobers’ by his fans, was one of the few personalities in the history of cricket who gave a new definition to the game. His demise has been officially confirmed by Cricket West Indies (CWI) and International Cricket Council (ICC), after which cricketers and sports lovers from all over the world are paying tribute to this great player. He was not only a great batsman but also took 235 wickets in Test cricket with his magical left-arm bowling. Sobers’ specialty was that he was adept at bowling all three types of bowling, from medium fast to orthodox spin and wrist spin. The name of Sir Garfield Sobers is recorded in golden letters in the books of cricket, because he became the first batsman in the world to hit 6 sixes in all 6 balls of an over in first-class cricket. He accomplished this historic feat on 31 August 1968 while playing for Nottinghamshire against Glamorgan spinner Malcolm Nash. This record of his started a new era of aggressive batting in the world of cricket. A record of 365 runs was made against Pakistan * Sir Gary Sobers played a historic inning of 365 runs unbeaten while playing against Pakistan in the year 1958. This was the highest individual score by any batsman in the history of Test cricket at that time. This magical record of Sobers remained unbroken for 36 years, which was later broken by his compatriot and great West Indies batsman Brian Lara (375 runs) in 1994. Wisden chose him as ‘Cricketer of the Century’, he received knighthood.
