Ladakh’s famous education reformer and environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk is currently sitting on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi for his demands. Due to his ongoing agitation since June 28, his health is continuously deteriorating, due to which concern has increased in the entire country. Many Bollywood stars have come forward in support of Wangchuk and are appealing to him to take care of his health. In this episode, now actor Vivek Oberoi has also given his reaction on this issue.
‘I am an actor, not a leader’: Vivek Oberoi
Recently, when the media asked Vivek Oberoi about Sonam Wangchuk’s fast and her demands, the actor replied in a very balanced and measured manner. Avoiding any direct political statement, he said, “Man, I am an actor, not a leader. So I don’t pay much attention to political things. We just look at things like an observer and learn from them. Every day in life we get to learn something new.”
Healthy democracy and freedom of expression
When Vivek was asked how he sees this entire situation, he emphasized the beauty of democracy. The actor said that in a healthy democracy every person has every right to express his views. According to Vivek, “I think every voice should have its place in a healthy democracy. If people are putting forward their demands and ideas in a peaceful manner, then it is a sign of our democracy being strong.” However, Vivek’s balanced response has become a topic of discussion on social media, where some people are praising his neutrality, while others are also raising questions about not taking a more clear stand on this sensitive issue.
Long battle for education reform
Sonam Wangchuk is fighting for the issues of Ladakh which are to transparency and accountability in the education system. The movement of Wangchuk, who made his mark worldwide through innovations like ‘Ice Stupa’ and received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 2018, has now taken a bigger form. Many film personalities like Sonakshi Sinha and Fatima Sana Shaikh have already voiced their support. Now everyone’s eyes are on what decision the government takes on these demands of Sonam Wangchuk and when will this fast end.
