Anthony Gordon has opened up about his immense disappointment after England’s dramatic exit from the World Cup at the hands of Argentina. The Barcelona winger had earlier given England hope by scoring the opening goal in the semi-final, but Thomas Tuchel’s men conceded twice late in the game, ending the Three Lions’ dream of reaching their first World Cup final since 1966.
Heartbreak in the semi-final
England’s hopes of making the World Cup final were dashed once more following a tense 2-1 defeat to Argentina in Atlanta. Barcelona’s Gordon put Tuchel’s side ahead in the 55th minute, converting a fine cross from Morgan Rogers. However, Tuchel’s decision to substitute the winger later in the match backfired, as Argentina fought back with late goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lautaro Martinez to snatch victory.
Gordon’s emotional message to supporters
Posting from his personal Instagram account, the former Newcastle United forward shared his sorrow and disappointment with England fans after the heartbreaking defeat. Gordon wrote: “Truly devastated. I genuinely believed this was our time to win after waiting so many years, but it wasn’t meant to be, and this one will hurt for a long time.”
He continued: “I’ve never wanted to win so badly, not just for the trophy but for everything we’ve built as a team and for what it would have meant for England. Representing my country at a World Cup has been an incredible honour, and the memories we’ve made will stay with me forever.”
Barcelona star thanks the fans
The 25-year-old enjoyed a standout tournament in North America, recording one goal and three assists in six matches. Gordon also took a moment to appreciate the overwhelming support from fans both in the United States and back home in England. “Thank you to everyone who supported us throughout this journey, whether you were cheering in the US or from home. It was amazing to see the unity and celebrations. Our day will come,” he added in his heartfelt message.
Looking ahead to the third-place play-off
Before returning to Spain, Gordon will have one final duty with the national team as England face France in the third-place play-off. The fixture will test the squad’s resilience after their painful defeat in Atlanta. Once the World Cup campaign concludes, Gordon will take a short summer break before rejoining Barcelona in Catalonia for pre-season training.
