Ahead of the much-anticipated FIFA World Cup final between Spain and Argentina this Sunday, authorities in New York have issued a health alert, urging residents to remain indoors due to deteriorating air quality.
Smoke from ongoing wildfires has impacted the air in both New York and New Jersey, prompting officials to recommend that people avoid outdoor activities as much as possible. The advisory comes as the city prepares to host one of the biggest matches in world football.
According to a report from BBC Sport, the situation has not yet affected the players, who have continued with their training sessions in the lead-up to the final. However, there are growing concerns about the potential health risks for both players and spectators exposed to prolonged periods outdoors under these conditions.
The BBC report also highlighted that other football matches held in recent days have been affected by the poor air quality and heat, creating challenging playing environments.
One notable example was the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) fixture between Gotham FC and Washington Spirit on Wednesday night. Due to the harsh conditions, regulations required players to take two breaks in each half to reduce the risk of heat and smoke-related health issues.
Washington Spirit forward Trinity Rodman commented on the situation after the match, suggesting that the game should perhaps have been postponed, as the players were visibly struggling. “Not to make excuses at all, but I think on both sides we were all like, ‘another break, another break, another break’,” Rodman remarked.
At present, there has been no indication that the World Cup final itself will be postponed or relocated. Argentina are set to face Spain in New York on Sunday, and BBC Sport’s report noted that the air quality is expected to improve later today.
The only confirmed adjustment to the match schedule will be an extended half-time break, lasting 25 minutes instead of the usual 15, as a precautionary measure to help players recover in the challenging conditions.
