Premarin is an estrogen-based therapy used specifically to control symptoms caused by estrogen deficiency after menopause. According to the report, more than 6.2 lakh units were sold in India in the last one year and it was included in the major drugs of this category.
What options do women have now?
According to doctors, there may be some other hormone therapy options available instead of Premarin, but the same treatment is not right for every woman. Apart from Premarin, there are also alternatives like Evalon vaginal cream available in India, which are based on different types of estrogen. Additionally, in some cases, doctors may suggest other treatments such as local estrogen therapy, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or non-hormonal treatments depending on the symptoms of menopause. Treatment is chosen based on the woman’s age, symptoms, health status, and other risks.

Experts say that it is important to consult a gynecologist before opting for Premarin. One should avoid starting or stopping hormone medicines on one’s own will. Awareness about menopause is still low in India even though a large number of women face the symptoms associated with it. According to experts, due to lack of availability of such medicines, women may face difficulty in getting treatment at the right time.
