The second match of the 3-match series between India and England was played in Cardiff on Thursday (16 July). In this match, England won by 6 wickets and achieved 1-1 draw in the series. When invited to bat first, Team India was all out for 233 runs in 44 overs. Virat Kohli scored 65 runs, while Shreyas Iyer scored 66 runs. Captain Shubhman Gill scored 31 runs. Apart from these, no batsman could perform, due to which the Indian team could not set a big target for England.

In reply, England also did not have a good start. He lost both the openers for just 8 runs. Indian bowlers took wickets at regular intervals and reduced England’s half innings to 125. Team India seemed to be moving towards victory but Joe Root stood down. Root took the lead from one end and along with the lower order batsmen led England to victory.

Root could not complete his century

35-year-old Root, along with Will Jacques (30), managed England’s faltering innings by making a partnership of 72 runs for the sixth wicket. After this, he made an unbeaten 38-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Gus Atkinson, taking England to the threshold of victory. However, Root could not complete his 20th ODI century.

When England needed just 4 runs in 6 overs to win, Root was unbeaten on 99 runs. Atkinson was on strike in the 45th over. Prasidh Krishna bowled the first ball of this over wide. Now England had to score only 3 runs. Atkinson could have brought Root on strike with a single, so that he could complete his 21st ODI century but he hit a four. Remained unbeaten on Route 99 itself. He became the first England player to remain not out on this score in ODIs. Earlier, 16 batsmen had returned unbeaten on 99 in ODI, which also includes the name of former Indian opener Virender Sehwag. See the complete list here.
