Micah Richards delivered his trademark thoughtful analysis during England’s heartbreaking 2-1 loss to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semi-final on Wednesday night.
The former Manchester City and England defender broke down how the Three Lions’ approach faltered after taking a 1-0 lead. Under coach Thomas Tuchel, England attempted to defend their advantage but were undone by two late goals — both created by Lionel Messi — which sealed Argentina’s place in the final.
Richards’s composure and professionalism on air drew admiration, particularly after he revealed the devastating personal news he had received just before the broadcast.
In a heartfelt message shared online, Richards disclosed that his father, Lincoln, had passed away unexpectedly only hours before he went on air.
“Not long before going live today, I received the heartbreaking news that my father Lincoln had passed away,” Richards wrote. “His death came as a complete shock, and he has left us far too soon.
“He was my biggest supporter. Throughout my life, he rarely missed a match. From my childhood days, he would drive me anywhere I needed to go, and during my professional career, he was the proudest parent imaginable. It was very unusual for him not to be by my side.”
Richards continued, “I understand how important watching England’s World Cup matches is for people back home, and how it brings families together across generations like few other experiences can. I know that as a proud old-school Yorkshireman, my dad would have wanted the show to go on tonight. And so it did.”
He concluded his tribute with, “Thinking of my siblings and all my extended family today as we remember my father Lincoln — my hero and my inspiration.”
Richards was part of the BBC’s punditry team alongside Wayne Rooney and Joe Hart at the Atlanta Stadium, providing coverage of the semi-final clash.
Following his post, messages of condolence and support flooded in from fellow sports professionals and fans alike. Sky Sports and The Overlap podcast extended their sympathies to Richards and his family.
Former Formula 1 driver Jenson Button offered his prayers, while fellow pundit Karen Carney commented, “Sending love Micah, he will be so proud.”
Richards also received messages from former England captain John Terry, Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, and football legend Clarence Seedorf, all expressing their support during his time of loss.
Despite the personal tragedy, Richards remained composed and committed to his role, earning widespread respect for his professionalism in such difficult circumstances.
