Spain’s teenage football star Lamine Yamal experienced a frightening security incident after burglars attempted to break into his residence in Barcelona, just hours after he played a key role in Spain’s 2-0 win over France to reach the World Cup final.
Security alert thwarts burglary attempt
The break-in was reported at Yamal’s home located in Esplugues de Llobregat, a suburb of Barcelona, shortly after Spain’s semi-final victory in Texas. Although the young forward was away with the national team, his private security team acted swiftly to prevent any property loss.
According to reports from Euro News, security personnel noticed two masked individuals on CCTV trying to scale the boundary wall of the mansion. Their prompt response forced the intruders to flee before they could gain entry or steal any valuables.
Police investigation continues in Barcelona
The Mossos d'Esquadra, Catalonia’s regional police force, were immediately alerted after the suspects were detected. Although the culprits escaped before officers arrived, a full investigation is now underway to identify and apprehend them.
Forensic specialists are examining the surveillance footage captured by the property’s cameras, hoping that the recordings will help identify the offenders behind the attempted burglary at the high-profile residence.
A recurring issue for footballers
This is not an isolated case, as other homes in the same upscale neighbourhood have also been targeted in recent months. Organised criminal groups across Europe often focus on footballers’ residences, aware of the expensive jewellery, watches, and other luxury possessions kept inside.
Yamal, who has occasionally shared glimpses of his lifestyle and personal items on social media, may have drawn unwanted attention from such gangs. The trend of targeting players’ homes while they compete in major tournaments has become an increasing concern for athletes abroad.
Notable history of the mansion
The property once belonged to former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique and international pop icon Shakira. It regained public attention recently when Yamal showcased the mansion shortly before departing for the World Cup in North America.
As the 19-year-old prepares for the biggest match of his career in the World Cup final, efforts in Catalonia remain focused on ensuring the safety of his family and assets. The unsuccessful break-in stands as a stark reminder of the heightened security risks faced by football’s emerging stars.
