Jude Bellingham and Thomas Tuchel appeared to have differing views on England’s display against Norway in the World Cup quarter-final.

England’s extra-time triumph over Norway in their World Cup quarter-final encounter has brought focus to the relationship between head coach Thomas Tuchel and star midfielder Jude Bellingham.

Instead of being a straightforward celebration of England’s hard-fought victory over the Norwegians, the post-match briefings in Miami revealed a clear difference in opinion between the manager and the player regarding the overall performance.

Tensions reportedly surfaced immediately after the final whistle in Miami. Although Bellingham’s two goals were decisive in securing England’s passage to the semi-finals, Tuchel delivered a blunt assessment during his post-match comments.

“We made life very, very difficult for ourselves today,” Tuchel told ITV.

“The commitment was there, but we played too slowly, made too many technical mistakes and were sloppy.”

When Bellingham heard about his manager’s public criticism, the Real Madrid midfielder offered a firm reply.

“You don’t win every game by completing a thousand passes. Sometimes you have to grind it out and win the ugly way. That’s exactly what we did tonight.”

Amid growing media speculation about possible unrest, Tuchel has since been quick to downplay the situation. As reported by The Athletic, the German coach has rejected any claims of internal conflict within the England camp.

Speaking ahead of England’s semi-final clash, Tuchel maintained that there are “no cracks” in his relationship with Bellingham and insisted that the two are actually “closer than ever.”

This is not the first time Tuchel’s candid communication style has sparked tension with Bellingham.

Late last year, Tuchel publicly commented on Bellingham’s on-field temperament, suggesting that his intensity can occasionally spill over in ways that some observers find excessive.

“I see this with my parents, with my mum, that she sometimes cannot see the nice, well-educated, well-behaved guy that I see,” Tuchel stated at the time, later apologising for how his remarks were phrased.

Tuchel’s forthright approach has long been a hallmark of his managerial career. Known for being demanding, outspoken, and at times polarising, he has previously clashed with high-profile players and executives during his tenures at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bayern Munich.

With England now just one step away from the World Cup Final, supporters will be hoping this recent exchange is nothing more than a manifestation of the coach and player’s shared competitive drive rather than a sign of discord that could jeopardise their championship ambitions.
