Karl Darlow has completed a move from Leeds United to Manchester United after turning down a contract extension with Leeds. The 35-year-old described the transfer as a “special opportunity” in a farewell message to fans.
As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds United had offered Darlow fresh terms but were unable to assure him a regular starting role, given their plans to bring in another goalkeeper during the summer transfer window. As a result, Darlow chose to accept an offer from their long-standing rivals Manchester United.
In his farewell message, shared through a video montage, the Wales international expressed his gratitude to his team-mates, coaching staff, and club employees. He said he was proud of his contribution to helping Leeds secure promotion and subsequently retain their Premier League status.
The move is bound to stir emotions among supporters, particularly given the historic rivalry between the two clubs across the Pennines. Despite that, Darlow’s message was full of appreciation and positivity toward Leeds United.
Upon joining Manchester United, Darlow said he was honoured to sign for the club and excited to become part of what he called an “excellent group of goalkeepers.” He mentioned that he is eager to help maintain the high standards expected at the club, adding that he looks forward to supporting his team-mates and contributing to the squad’s progress.
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, spoke highly of Darlow, noting that the goalkeeper has consistently proven his ability to perform at the top level. Wilcox praised Darlow’s professionalism, commitment, and character, describing him as a valuable addition to the goalkeeping department.
Darlow’s move marks another chapter in his long football career, which has seen him earn respect for his reliability and leadership both on and off the pitch.
