New Delhi: The deadline for Special Intensive Revision or SIR of the voter list in Delhi has been extended. The Election Commission has postponed the dates of both the draft list and the final list following the request of the Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi. Now the draft roll will be released on 17th August instead of 5th August and the final list will come on 19th October instead of 7th October.
Why was the deadline extended?
The CEO of Delhi had written a letter to the Election Commission on July 14 asking for additional time. He said that BLOs need more time to complete the work of door-to-door verification. Accepting this, the Commission extended the entire schedule by 12 days.
The verification work started in the capital from June 30. Earlier it was to be finished by July 29, but now BLOs will be able to go door-to-door and check the data till August 8. That means the field staff has got 10 days’ relief.
What is the new schedule?
Election Commission has updated the complete calendar of SIR.
- Door-to-door verification: Now it will continue till August 8
- Draft voter list published: 17 August
- Claims and objections: Can be filed from 17 August to 16 September
- Final voter list: Will be released on October 19
Earlier the draft list was to come on 5th August and the final list was to come on 7th October. With the new schedule, all other phases of SIR have also been advanced by about 12 days.
What is the purpose of SIR?
The purpose of SIR i.e. Special Intensive Revision is to completely update and clean the voter list before the upcoming elections. Under this, BLOs go to every house and verify name, address, age and other details. New voters are added, names of shifted people are removed and duplicate entries are corrected.
The Election Commission says that this process will reduce the scope for error in the voter list and fake voting will be stopped. This time SIR is being considered very important in view of the assembly elections in Delhi.
Now after the draft list comes on August 17, people will be able to check the names both online and offline. If anyone’s name is missing or wrong, claims and objections can be filed till September 16. After the final list comes on October 19, the same voter list will be used in the elections.
