After the historic change in the politics of West Bengal, now preparations have started to change the framework of development of Kolkata and the entire state. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, which came to power by winning a huge majority in the recently held assembly elections, is taking major policy decisions to strengthen the infrastructure of Bengal. In this context, a blueprint for a mega project has been prepared for the eastern part of the country, which was being demanded for years. The government has proposed to build a new mega greenfield airport on about 1,000 to 1,500 acres of land at Kalyani near Kolkata. Chingrighata to New Town Elevated Corridor: Will provide great relief from jam. Lakhs of people are troubled every day by the traffic jam on ‘Chingrighata’, one of the busiest routes connecting Kolkata and its IT hub. To find a permanent solution to this problem, the government has decided to rapidly advance the Chingrighata-New Town Elevated Corridor project. With the opening of this new corridor, the youth working in the IT sector of Salt Lake and New Town will save valuable time and the journey will become very smooth and safe. New metro projects and expressways will connect North and South Bengal. Keeping in mind the local (geographical) development, the new government is not limited to Kolkata only. Feasibility study for metro rail connectivity between Siliguri-Jalpaiguri and Durgapur-Asansol has been approved to connect remote parts of the state. Along with this, work on road and railway infrastructure projects worth about Rs 18,680 crore has been expedited in coordination with the Central and State Governments. This includes the 4-lane Economic Corridor being built from Kharagpur to Moregram, which will reduce the travel time between many districts by about 7 to 8 hours.
