New Delhi. The US Army’s Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed in a statement released online that the strikes had been launched. In the attacks being carried out for the last few days, America had targeted Iran only at night. CENTCOM said, ‘The purpose of these attacks is to further weaken the military capabilities of the Iranian military, which it is using to attack commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz.’ These attacks have been carried out at a time when the interim agreement between Iran and America has completely broken down. CENTCOM said it struck Greater Tunb Island, targeting Iran’s defense and missile sites, the AP reported.

America has again imposed a naval blockade on Iran and has intensified air strikes from today. America has taken this action in response to Tehran’s attacks on ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. The US strikes targeted an Iranian army barracks, killing seven soldiers and injuring more than 260 people across the country, according to Iranian officials.

The ongoing attacks on each other between the US and Iran in West Asia for several days and new threats regarding the waterway, which is vital for the world’s energy supply, have completely weakened the interim agreement to end the conflict. This has increased the risk of another large-scale war in the region. America first imposed a blockade on Iran in April. After this, it was removed after an interim agreement was reached last month. Under this agreement, the attacks were stopped and 60 days were fixed for talks on issues like Iran’s nuclear program. But these talks have come to a halt due to the increasing conflict over the Strait of Hormuz.

When the US and Israel started war against Iran on February 28, Tehran effectively closed the movement of ships through this waterway. Due to this move, the prices of oil, fertilizers and many other commodities increased sharply. This gave Iran a considerable lead in negotiations.

Rising prices are a big challenge for US President Donald Trump and his Republican Party. The party is hoping to retain control of parliament in elections in November. However, the US is struggling to reopen this waterway. Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) on Wednesday threatened to block all energy exports from the Middle East in response to the blockade. Oil and gas exports from the region will either be for all or for no one, the IRGC said.
