Didier Deschamps was left furious with the officiating as France’s hopes of reaching a third successive World Cup final were crushed by a clinical Spain side in Texas. The Les Bleus manager directed his frustration towards referee Ivan Barton after a contentious first-half penalty that set the tone for a disappointing evening.
Deschamps questions the standard of refereeing
Following the 2-0 defeat that ended France’s campaign for a third world title, Deschamps did not hide his displeasure with Barton’s performance. The game turned in the 22nd minute when Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the spot after Lamine Yamal was ruled to have been fouled by Lucas Digne.
Deschamps was visibly irritated by the call, insisting the ball had hit Yamal’s arm before the contact occurred. “If I say anything, I’ll look like a sore loser because we lost,” the 57-year-old coach said. “But I ask you: is the referee up to the task of handling a semi-final? There’s the penalty, but that’s not all; it just adds to everything else. I’ve nothing personal against the referee tonight, but ask yourselves the question.”
Technical shortcomings haunt Les Bleus
Aside from the refereeing controversy, Deschamps admitted that France were second best in nearly all areas. Spain doubled their advantage through Pedro Porro in the 58th minute, leaving a French frontline featuring Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise unable to make an impact. The statistics painted a grim picture, with France failing to register a close-range attempt until the closing stages.
“To have any chance, we needed to be at our best,” Deschamps confessed. “Unfortunately, we weren’t. Today, [Spain] defended extremely well. They gave us very little space. On top of that, because we made technical mistakes, it became difficult to trouble them. Our technical quality was below what we have shown in earlier matches.”
He continued: “Compared with them, in our passing combinations and sequences, they were also excellent at reading the game and cutting out passes. We couldn’t find solutions. I don’t want to say that our attacking and technical play just disappeared by itself. That’s normally one of our strengths.
“There was also plenty of credit due to the opponent. I’m not going to condemn everything we did or erase what we’ve achieved. But I’ll say it again: in a match like this, against a team like Spain, you have to be at your absolute maximum. France weren’t at that level tonight.”
Mbappe criticises the tactical setup
While Deschamps focused on officiating and execution, captain Kylian Mbappe turned his frustration towards the tactical approach. The Real Madrid forward was visibly upset with how Spain’s midfield dictated the tempo. Mbappe suggested that the tactical plan failed to limit the influence of La Roja’s playmakers.
“We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that’s tough,” Mbappe said. “Fabian [Ruiz] and Rodri had lots of time to play. There was a lack of coordination during the press. I think we should have gone man-to-man and forced them to track us. We didn’t play the match we wanted, technically or tactically. When you don’t do what’s required in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.”
End of an era for Deschamps
The defeat signals a sombre conclusion to Deschamps’ remarkable 14-year tenure as France’s head coach. Despite the heartbreak, he refused to let one disappointing night define a legacy that includes four straight World Cup quarter-final appearances, the 2018 triumph, and a final appearance four years later. He admitted that his side simply lost control against a high-calibre opponent.
“We didn’t control things well enough,” he said. “The opponent forced us into errors. But this was a World Cup semi-final. For two of our players, it was their first one. That doesn’t take away from what we’ve achieved before this. I don’t want to diminish everything that has been accomplished.” With Zinedine Zidane reportedly waiting to take charge after the tournament, France must now regroup for their third-place play-off in Miami.
