Fernando Morientes has revealed the secret behind Spain’s remarkable achievements on the international stage.
Spain have advanced to their second-ever World Cup final after defeating France in the semi-final.
The reigning European champions delivered a commanding performance in Tuesday’s World Cup semi-final, easing past France to book a place in their second global final in 16 years.
Goals from Mikel Oyarzabal and Pedro Porro ensured Luis de la Fuente’s men kept alive their hopes of repeating their 2010 triumph, as they now await either England or Argentina on 19 July.
La Roja have now reached five international finals out of six since 2021, clinching Euro 2024 and the Nations League titles while finishing runners-up twice in the latter competition.
Their current dominance has drawn comparisons to the iconic ‘tiki-taka’ generation that captured the World Cup and two European Championships between 2008 and 2012.
Former Spain striker Fernando Morientes believes that this resurgence is a reflection of the nation’s long-term commitment to nurturing not only players but also coaches and footballing infrastructure.
The ex-Real Madrid and Liverpool forward, now 50 years old, scored 27 goals in 47 appearances for Spain during a nine-year international career that included two World Cup campaigns.
Morientes explained, “I think it comes down to the work done in the lower categories. Not just at the federation, though. I’d also include the work done in the academies of LaLiga clubs.”
He continued, “There’s also a strong focus on developing coaches, and I believe coaches are crucial in shaping young players. It’s not only about having talent; you need quality coaches and support staff to bring out the best in every young Spanish player.”
“Of course, countries like France, Portugal, and Brazil also produce a lot of young talent. But in Spain, this philosophy has been ingrained in us from an early age.”
Morientes added, “I value the work being done in the lower levels of the Spanish federation, as well as in LaLiga, because I understand how their academies operate. They’re producing results that weren’t developed in the same way during our generation.”
Looking ahead, Morientes expressed a desire to see a repeat of the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England, as a way of assessing the strength of emerging stars from the Premier League and LaLiga.
He said, “Obviously, I’d love for Spain to win and face England again in the final. I wouldn’t mind a Spain versus Argentina final either. But comparing the strength of the Premier League and LaLiga would be fascinating.”
“There’s always a friendly rivalry between both leagues, as they’re two of the best in the world. So, seeing LaLiga measured against the Premier League in the final would be fantastic.”
