Manchester United are moving swiftly in the transfer market, securing three new signings so far with more potential arrivals on the horizon.
After clinching a top-four finish last season, United have returned to the UEFA Champions League, adding further appeal to their already strong stature. With Michael Carrick at the helm, the Red Devils could field a formidable side for the upcoming Premier League campaign.
Here’s a look at how United might line up when they take on Hull City in their first match of the season.
Goalkeeper Lammens will be eager to put his World Cup error behind him and will be warmly received by the Old Trafford faithful, who will be glad to see him guarding the posts again. His arrival has brought stability that has been missing since David de Gea’s departure, making him one of United’s shrewdest transfer acquisitions in recent years.
Reports from TEAMtalk indicate that both Manchester United and Newcastle United are interested in signing Welsh international Williams. Although Williams has been playing on the left for Nottingham Forest, his stronger right foot allows him to switch sides comfortably if United decide to bring him in as a replacement for Diogo Dalot. Forest, however, are reportedly readying a lucrative new contract offer to keep their player, meaning United will need to act quickly if they want to secure the deal.
Among United’s centre-backs, Argentina international Lisandro Martinez stands out as the most reliable option. Despite missing eight games last season due to injury, Martinez remains a composed and effective defender when fit. With his contract entering its final year, United will have to decide whether to extend his stay or risk losing him on a free transfer.
Harry Maguire, handed a new one-year contract, has managed to overturn his earlier reputation as a source of jokes and is now regarded as one of United’s strongest defenders. The 33-year-old is expected to share playing time with Leny Yoro throughout the season. Having been omitted from the England squad, Maguire could use that disappointment as motivation to raise his performance even higher.
Left-back Luke Shaw’s fitness seems to have turned a corner. After suffering five separate injuries in the 2024–25 season, he missed only five days due to illness last year, showing encouraging signs of full fitness. Although his absence from the England call-up may have been harsh given his solid club form, Shaw is expected to retain his starting place at Old Trafford. Now 31, the veteran could alternate with Patrick Dorgu when Carrick wants a more attack-minded presence on the flank.
United’s first signing of the summer came in the form of a £48 million move for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos. The Brazilian, who previously operated as the holding midfielder alongside Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez, will likely occupy the same role at Old Trafford—shielding the defence and dictating play from deep. At just 22, Santos appears to be a smart long-term investment.
Youri Tielemans, signed from Aston Villa, brings consistency and creativity to United’s midfield. Known for his ability to control tempo and break defensive lines with incisive passing, the Belgian will be a key addition, especially with United’s quick attacking players ahead of him.
Despite being 31, Bruno Fernandes remains the heartbeat of Manchester United. After setting a new Premier League record for assists last season, there’s every reason to believe the Portuguese playmaker can replicate that form again. With his contract entering its final year, this could be his farewell season—but if he maintains his output, United would be wise to extend his stay.
Forward Bryan Mbeumo netted 11 goals in his debut season at United—a decent return, though he showed inconsistency in front of goal. His finishing sometimes fell short of expectations and his xG figures suggested he could have done better. However, Carrick will likely emphasise that Mbeumo’s positioning and work rate remain positives. For United to mount a serious title challenge, he will need to be more clinical.
Mbeumo’s role on the right wing pushes Amad Diallo to the left, his less preferred side, though he can still make an impact there. The left-footed winger managed only five goal contributions in 32 matches last season, and Carrick will expect more productivity from him this year.
Matheus Cunha is expected to lead the line, with Benjamin Sesko likely to start from the bench. The Brazilian striker, arguably United’s standout signing of last season, contributed 10 goals and two assists. Though not a conventional number nine, Cunha’s movement and link-up play make him an essential attacking weapon for Carrick’s side.
