England captain Harry Brook endured yet another disappointing showing against Jasprit Bumrah in the first ODI against India at Edgbaston, Birmingham, on Tuesday. The right-hander fell first ball to the Indian fast bowler on his second return to a Bumrah over for another record against one of world cricket's best pacers.
Brook came into the market looking to make a statement, but was taken by Bumrah with his only ball. A vicious in-swinging offering which Brook guided at point.
Though dismissing him early, Brook stayed composed as he spoke to the press at the end of the game, but it was his brief and frank remark on Bumrah that drew attention before he walked out of the press room.
Before the ODI series, Brook had been in superb touch and was the highest run-getter in the recently concluded five-match T20I against India. Brook had scored 229 runs at an average of 114.50 and a strike rate of over 214. His innings of 95 off 45 balls in the fifth T20I was absolutely stunning.
Harry Brook's Reaction to Jasprit Bumrah
During the post-match press conference, when asked about encountering Bumrah after yet another quick wicket, the England captain chose to keep it brief.
He said, "He is a decent bowler. It got bounced a little bit, and yeah, I nicked it through to slip."

He then gave a short answer to the question and exited the press conference, leaving his comment circulating among internet forums among sports fans.

Bumrah Continues to Dominate Brook
The newest dismissal piled on to Bumrah's otherwise consistent record against Brook in all formats.
It was the first competitive encounter between these two in an ODI, and Bumrah took the first step in winning it by dismissing Brook with his very first delivery.
So, Brook has also faced Bumrah in T20 Internationals, but he hasn't managed to get a single run off him in the six balls that he's faced. It was actually Bumrah who removed him in the semi-final of the 2026 T20 World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai off the very first ball he faced.
In Test cricket, Brook scored 15 runs off Bumrah from 38 balls before getting out.
England will now look to their Captain to reverse the trend when the two teams meet again in the 2nd ODI, at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff, on 16 th July. With the series currently tied at 1–0, already in the bag for India, England has to find a way to win.
Once more, Brook is set to find Bumrah, who has been a persistent thorn in his side in all formats, again testing him. The clash between the two will continue to be one of the battles to keep an eye on for the rest of the ODI series.
