Shubman Gill continued his impressive run at Edgbaston, while Axar Patel starred with both bat and ball as India defeated England by six wickets in the first ODI to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Axar delivered a match-winning all-round performance, registering career-best ODI figures of 4/62 before remaining unbeaten on 57 off 52 balls to guide India to victory with 28 balls to spare.
Chasing 259, India recovered from an early wobble through a crucial 101-run partnership between captain Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer. Gill looked set for another century after scoring a fluent 80 off 75 balls, but severe cramps forced him to retire hurt.
After Gill's departure, England briefly fought back. Iyer was run out for 35, and Josh Tongue dismissed KL Rahul to reduce India to 160/4, raising hopes of a comeback for the hosts.
However, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar ensured there were no further setbacks. The pair stitched together an unbeaten 100-run stand for the fifth wicket, steering India comfortably to 262/4 in 45.2 overs.
Axar brought up his fourth ODI fifty in just 39 balls, while Sundar remained unbeaten on 52 off 63 deliveries, sealing the chase with a composed knock.
Earlier, India got off to a steady start as Gill and Rohit Sharma added 43 runs for the opening wicket. Sam Curran dismissed Rohit for 11, while Jofra Archer trapped Virat Kohli lbw for a single-digit score, leaving India at 48/2.
Gill and Iyer then steadied the innings with sensible batting, taking the pressure off the visitors before Gill was forced to leave the field due to cramps.
Earlier in the day, England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs, thanks largely to Axar Patel's outstanding spell and a disciplined effort from India's pace attack.
Joe Root remained unbeaten on 76, while Liam Dawson scored 68 as the duo rescued England with a vital 121-run partnership for the seventh wicket after the hosts had collapsed dramatically.
England were cruising at 61/1 before losing four wickets in quick succession to slump to 80/5. Gurnoor Singh triggered the collapse by dismissing both openers, Ben Duckett (43) and Jacob Bethell (14), in the same over.
Jasprit Bumrah then removed England captain Harry Brook, while Prasidh Krishna accounted for Jos Buttler and Sam Curran to leave the hosts in deep trouble.
Will Jacks made 19 before falling to Shivam Dube after which Root and Dawson rebuilt the innings with patience and sensible strokeplay.
Dawson registered his maiden ODI half-century before Axar broke the stand by dismissing him for 68. Root, who survived a dropped catch by Dube, carried his bat with an unbeaten 76, but lacked support from the lower order as Axar cleaned up the tail. Brief Scores
