Karl Darlow has completed a move to Manchester United after rejecting a new contract offer from Leeds United, calling the transfer a special opportunity in his career. As reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds were unable to guarantee him the number one position due to their intention to bring in another goalkeeper during the summer.
The 35-year-old Welsh international opted to join Manchester United rather than remain at Elland Road. His departure comes after playing an important role in helping Leeds secure promotion back to the Premier League and then successfully avoid relegation in the following season.
In his farewell message on Instagram, accompanied by Olivia Dean’s song ‘Ok Love You Bye’, Darlow expressed gratitude towards his teammates, coaching staff, club employees, and the fans. He described his tenure at Leeds as a special chapter in his life, shared his pride in the team’s promotion success, and vowed to continue supporting the club from afar. However, given the intense rivalry between Leeds and Manchester United, his farewell note is unlikely to strike the right chord with many Leeds supporters.
Darlow expressed immense pride in signing for Manchester United, noting that he joins a talented group of goalkeepers who are fully committed to maintaining the high standards expected at Old Trafford. He added that he is eager to contribute, support his teammates, and help push the squad forward in the upcoming season.
Manchester United’s director of football, Jason Wilcox, commended Darlow for his proven top-flight pedigree, strong work ethic, and determination. He described the veteran goalkeeper as a valuable addition to an already impressive goalkeeping unit. The club emphasised that Darlow’s experience and quality will further strengthen their depth between the posts.
