birmingham, 14th July. In this tour of United Kingdom (UK), after a nightmarish T20 series against first Ireland and then England, Team India got a little respite on Tuesday night, when it won the first one with the help of Shubman Gill’s captaincy innings (80 runs, 75 balls, one six, 11 fours) and Akshar Patel’s all-round performance (4-62 and unbeaten 57 runs, 52 balls, one six, five fours). In the Day International match, England were defeated by six wickets in 28 balls. With the first win after six consecutive defeats, Gill and Company have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

With the help of Root and Dawson, England scored 258

Coming to bat first at the Edgbaston ground, England, after a delicate situation of 6-107, scored a better score of 258 runs in 47.5 overs with the century partnership between Joe Root (76 not out, 76 balls, one six, six fours) and Liam Dawson (68 runs, 83 balls, one six, six fours).

With the fifties of Gill, Sundar and Akshar, India achieved the target in 28 balls.

Shubman’s responsible innings before retiring due to calf strain during the counter action, his century partnership with Shreyas Iyer (35 runs, 53 balls, two fours) and then the match-winning unbeaten fifties of Washington Sundar (52 runs, 63 balls, one six, four fours) and Akshar, helped India score 262 runs for four wickets in 45.2 overs.

Century partnerships between Gill-Shreyas and Sundar-Akshar

At one time the visitors’ score was 4-160, but ‘Player of the Match’ Akshar and Washington gave India an easy victory with an unbeaten 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket. On the other hand, Gill looked in great form and after the return of Rohit Sharma (11 runs) and Virat Kohli (five runs) within 48 runs, he gave momentum to the team with an important partnership of 101 runs with Shreyas. However, before getting close to his century, he had to retire due to calf and muscle cramps.

After Gill retired hurt, the match seemed to be leaning towards England for some time, when Shreyas and KL Rahul returned in consecutive overs. During this, Iyer was run out while KL Rahul was bowled by Josh Tong’s fast ball. At present, Akshar and Sundar batted patiently and did not allow any kind of pressure to come and gave the team the victory.

Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethel added 61 runs for the first wicket.

Earlier, Ben Duckett (43 runs, 45 balls, two sixes, six fours) and Jacob Bethel (14 runs, one four) made a partnership of 61 runs for the first wicket. But pacer Gurnoor Brar (2-61) returned both the openers in the 13th over while Jasprit Bumrah (1-31) celebrated his return to the team after a long time by disappointing captain Harry Brook (one run). Actually, this was Bumrah’s first One Day International match after the 2023 World Cup final.

On the other hand, in the 17th over, when Prasidh Krishna (2-50) sent off Jos Buttler (five runs) and Sam Curran (zero), half the team had returned at 80. Will Jacques (20 runs, 19 balls, three fours) tried to show his pace with Root but was returned by Shivam Dubey (1-27) in the 22nd over with the score at 107.

Root and Dawson made a partnership of 121 runs for the seventh wicket.

Here the English team looked to be in trouble, but experienced batsman Joe Root along with Dawson made England cross the two hundred mark with a partnership of 121 runs for the seventh wicket. The last four wickets of the English innings were taken by Akshar, but while Root remained unbeaten, the team crossed 250 runs. It is a different matter that Gill and his colleagues easily achieved the target.

The second match will be played in Cardiff on Thursday

The second match of the series will be played in Cardiff on 16 July. After that, on July 19, both the teams will play the final match at Lord’s Ground.
