Former Aston Villa striker Gabby Agbonlahor has confidently declared that Jude Bellingham, not Declan Rice, is set to take over from Harry Kane as England’s next captain. Bellingham has been one of the standout players at this year’s World Cup, guiding the Three Lions to the semi-finals, with his leadership on and off the field earning widespread admiration.
Agbonlahor backs Bellingham for the captaincy
Speaking to talkSPORT, Agbonlahor dismissed the notion that Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice is the natural successor to Kane. Although Thomas Tuchel recently appointed Rice as vice-captain, Agbonlahor insisted that Real Madrid’s Bellingham is the obvious choice, having led his side to the semi-finals with six goals to his name.
Agbonlahor said, “He’s the next England captain. Let’s not get it twisted, people talk about Declan Rice – no, it’s not. Jude Bellingham is the next England captain after Harry Kane. It’s a no-brainer. Say no more.” Bellingham’s brace against Mexico and his decisive goal in the 2-1 quarter-final win over Norway have underlined his importance to Gareth Southgate’s squad.
Comparison to French legend Zidane
Agbonlahor went on to liken Bellingham’s influence and composure to that of French football icon Zinedine Zidane, who famously led France to their World Cup triumph in 1998.
Highlighting Bellingham’s maturity and leadership qualities, Agbonlahor added, “He reminds me of Zidane in the way he plays. He’s carrying this team right now. I think he’s world-class, truly. And when you hear him speak off the pitch, he’s calm and grounded. I believe he’s England’s next captain after Harry Kane. He’s been outstanding and is really leading this team forward.”
Former team-mate predicts future leadership
That view is shared by Harlee Dean, who captained Bellingham during his breakthrough season at Birmingham City. Dean believes the midfielder’s natural authority makes him the obvious choice to take over the armband when the time comes.
Dean explained, “He plays with his chest out and never hides from responsibility. I don’t think he’s overly focused on becoming captain—of course, it’s a huge honour, but I imagine his mindset is, ‘If it happens, it happens.’ Even without the title, he’s already the player everyone looks to in that squad. He lifts those around him and makes them better. So, in two or three years, when Harry Kane decides to step back, it’ll naturally fall to Jude, in my opinion.”
What’s next for England and Bellingham?
England now face a massive challenge as they prepare to meet Argentina in the World Cup semi-final. Bellingham will be eager to add to his six-goal tally and continue inspiring his nation toward the ultimate prize. Whether or not he officially inherits the captain’s armband soon, his performances have already cemented his place as the driving force of this England generation.
