If you live in Delhi, then this news is very important for you. Now your home’s electricity bill may vary every month, even if your electricity consumption is the same. Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) is preparing to bring a new rule, once implemented, it will become easier for power companies to make changes in the bill. After this rule, companies will not need to take permission from the Commission every time for changing electricity rates or purchasing expenses.

What is DERC’s new plan?

In fact, DERC had suggested changes in these rules in 2017 itself, so that power companies can add the expenses directly to the bills of consumers as per requirement. Now opinion has been sought from the general public on this proposal, the last date of which is 27th September. After the implementation of this new rule, ‘Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge’ (FPPAS) will be automatically added to the electricity bill. This will improve the financial condition of the companies, but customers may see fluctuations in their bills every month. However, the maximum limit of this surcharge has been fixed at 10%.

Relief and rules for customers

Under the new rules, DERC has also made some rules to control the companies so that consumers do not face problems. If an electricity company forgets to collect the surcharge for a month, it will not be able to recover it from the customers later. Conversely, if the company mistakenly overcharges customers, it will have to return the amount with interest. DERC has also made it clear that if power companies do not reduce the bills on time, they will have to pay 1.2 times more interest, which will protect the interests of customers.
