Gandhinagar/Patan, July 14: The stunning 3D projection mapping display at Rani Ki Vav, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Gujarat, has been awarded a Gold Medal at the 17th WOW Awards Asia 2026. This accolade highlights the state's innovative use of immersive audio-visual technology to showcase one of India's most important heritage sites.

Situated at the 11th-century stepwell in Patan, this project earned recognition in the "Experiential Tech Awards – Achievement in Audio-Visual for an Event" category during the annual awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in the events and experiential technology sectors.

As of July 12, over 44,209 visitors have enjoyed the projection mapping experience, indicating a rising public interest since its launch earlier this year, according to the state government.

Rani Ki Vav, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, is celebrated as one of the finest examples of stepwell architecture in India, drawing numerous domestic and international tourists annually.

To improve the visitor experience, the state government has completed a permanent installation of an advanced 3D projection mapping system along with a heritage lighting setup at the site.

This project was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 31, after which the designated agency took over the operation and maintenance of the installation.

The implementing agency submitted the project for consideration at the WOW Awards Asia 2026, where it ultimately won the Gold Award.

This recognition acknowledges the project's innovative use of audio-visual technology to convey the historical and cultural importance of the heritage site, providing an immersive experience for visitors.

The projection mapping installation merges large-scale visual effects with heritage lighting to narrate the history and architectural significance of Rani Ki Vav, a monument built by Queen Udayamati in honor of King Bhima I of the Solanki dynasty.

Renowned for its intricate stone carvings and engineering prowess, the stepwell has become one of Gujarat's most popular heritage destinations.
