France vs Spain preview: Will the World Cup favourites reach a third straight final?

France are aiming for a third successive World Cup final under the guidance of Didier Deschamps, but Spain stand as their last major hurdle.

The semi-final encounter between France and Spain at the 2026 World Cup promises to be the toughest challenge yet for Deschamps’ men.

Spain have showcased the tournament’s most formidable defence, while France boast the most lethal attacking trio seen across North America this year.

The Spaniards have already proven they can topple this French side, having claimed a memorable win over them during the 2024 European Championship — a campaign Spain ultimately won.

As is typical in matches of this magnitude, the spotlight naturally turns to the key game-changers on each side and how they might shape the outcome.

For France, that figure is Kylian Mbappe — arguably the greatest World Cup player in history — while for Spain, it’s the young prodigy Lamine Yamal. On paper, that looks like a mismatch.

In England’s quarter-final clash on Saturday evening, Jude Bellingham filled that role perfectly, becoming the youngest player since Pele to score braces in consecutive World Cup knockout matches.

The presence of a true game-breaker — a player who rises when the pressure mounts — is vital in contests of this calibre, as seen when Norway’s Erling Haaland struggled and ultimately saw his side fall short.

However, with Mbappe and Yamal in the spotlight, the sense of unpredictability seems less than it did in the England versus Norway encounter.

For Spain, the unfortunate truth is that if the Barcelona youngster finds his rhythm, he might be the most perfectly suited player to dismantle this French superteam.

If one could design a player in a lab to overcome Deschamps’ France, the recipe would include a blend of long-range precision, fearless dribbling, and a sprinkle of that elusive “Big Game Riser” quality.

At his peak, Yamal could be the one to break the deadlock early, maintain attacking momentum, and keep France under sustained pressure.

But the Barcelona starboy hasn’t been performing at his best — not even close. Meanwhile, Mbappe appears determined to avenge the heartbreak of 2022 and further cement his World Cup legacy.

Spain’s defensive strength may count for little when France can field a forward line consisting of three players all ranked among the Top 5 Ballon d’Or candidates for 2027. Spain’s best hope lies in grabbing an early lead and maintaining high intensity — a task that depends heavily on Yamal’s form.

Unfortunately, FourFourTwo does not foresee Spain being able to contain the French attack, nor does it anticipate Yamal rediscovering his spark after a run of underwhelming displays.

Prediction: France 3-1 Spain
