A team of veterinarians in Himachal Pradesh recently saved the life of a nine-month pregnant buffalo by successfully performing a complicated surgery to remove 66 sharp metal objects from its stomach.

The life-saving operation was conducted at the Veterinary Polyclinic in Lalri, located in Himachal Pradesh’s Una district.

During the surgery, veterinarians removed several dangerous foreign objects, including nails, wires, and small metal fragments, which the buffalo had accidentally consumed.

The buffalo’s owner, Karnail Singh from Barewal village in the Haroli subdivision of Una district, brought the animal to the clinic after noticing that it had stopped eating fodder for nearly ten days. The buffalo appeared weak, lethargic and unwell.

Veterinary Officer Dr Nishant Ranaut said that a detailed medical examination, blood tests and ultrasound revealed the presence of a large number of metallic foreign bodies inside the buffalo’s stomach.

Considering the animal’s critical condition, the owner was advised to get the surgery done immediately.

A veterinary team successfully performed the operation and removed a total of 66 sharp metal objects from the buffalo’s stomach.

Doctors said that without timely surgery, the sharp objects could have caused severe injuries to the buffalo’s stomach and other internal organs, putting its life at serious risk.

After the successful operation, the buffalo’s health has been improving gradually. It has received significant relief from pain and will remain under the supervision of specialist veterinarians for the next seven to ten days, Dr Ranaut said.

Dr Ranaut also advised livestock owners to carefully check animal feed, especially wheat straw and dry fodder, before providing it to animals. He warned that unnoticed nails, wires, and other metal pieces mixed with fodder can accidentally enter an animal’s stomach and cause life-threatening complications. (Inputs from PTI)
