London, 13 July. The Indian women’s cricket team created history at the Lord’s Ground here on Monday, when on the fourth and final day of the women’s Test match played for the first time on this historic ground, which is called the Mecca of cricket, in just 95 minutes i.e. before lunch, Harmanpreet and Company defeated the host England by 270 runs.
Sneh Rana and Deepti Sharma wrapped up the hosts’ second innings at 186 runs.
When England made its second innings 6-130 on the last day against the daunting target of 457 runs, the Indian bowlers needed only four wickets and the off-spinner duo of Sneh Rana (4-42) and Deepti Sharma (2-36) put the final seal on India’s historic victory in just 22.5 overs of play. The host innings was restricted to just 186 runs in 62.5 overs.
Sophie Ecclestone scores international half-century
Although Sophie Ecclestone (50 runs, 66 balls, 105 minutes, six fours), who was playing only one run last evening, faced the visiting bowlers strongly and scored her first international half-century, but when Sneh Rana bowled her out and took her fourth victim of the innings and sixth of the match, India registered the fourth biggest win in terms of runs in the women’s test.
India recorded the fourth biggest win in terms of runs in women’s test
Amy Jones (54 runs, 80 balls, 120 minutes, six fours) could add only two more runs to her score on the fourth day, when Shefali Verma caught her at mid-wicket off Rana’s ball. On the other hand, Deepti Sharma bowled Issy Wong, who faced 33 balls for just one run, on her fifth ball of the day and also dismissed Lauren Bell (0) in the next over.
The last batsman Lauren Filer (four not out, 22 balls, one four) supported Sophie Ecclestone for eight overs. During this, Sophie completed her fifty in 61 balls, but ultimately could not stop a ball from Rana, which fell between the bat and the pad and turned and hit the stumps.
Yastika and Pacer Kranti registered their names on the honors board
It is noteworthy that if India was successful in setting a huge target of 457 runs in the fourth innings against England on Sunday, then Yastika Bhatia’s century (113 runs, 158 balls, 223 minutes, 14 fours) played a big role in it, which got her a place on the batting honors board of Lord’s Test.
Before him, medium pacer Kranti Gaur of Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh) had registered her name on the bowling honors board by taking five wickets on the second day itself. This board is for those players who score a century on this ground, take five wickets in an innings or 10 wickets in a Test match. With a total of seven wickets (5-37 and 2-54) in the match, Kranti won the ‘Player of the Match’ award.
Whereas former England captain Heather Knight and opening batsman Tammy Beaumont could not get a grand farewell. After announcing her retirement from international cricket before the match, she was out for 13 runs and a ‘golden duck’ respectively in England’s second innings on the third day.
Women’s test match played for the first time at Lord’s Ground
It is noteworthy that Lord’s, the most famous ground of cricket, has been hosting international matches since 1884. The first women’s international match (50 overs) was played here in 1976 between England and Australia. It took another 50 years for a women’s Test match (which was scheduled for four days from Friday) to be held at the ground, currently owned by the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), because the MCC had banned women from joining the club until 1999.
World record of spectators also became in women’s test
Interestingly, during the first women’s Test played at Lord’s, the spectators also created a new world record. The total viewership at the ground over four days reached 37,846, a new world record for any women’s Test match.
Harmanpreet said – ‘Hopefully, we will get to play more Tests here’
Currently, on India’s historic victory, captain Harmanpreet Kaur said, ‘Playing at Lord’s is always special… Hopefully we will get to play more (Test matches) here. Such matches give great pleasure.
