Sedans Ranked By Sales: Compact Sedans Dominate With Maruti Dzire Leading The Pack
Sandy Verma | July 14, 2026 1:24 AM CST

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire extended its lead over every other sedan sold in the country in June 2026, with wholesale dispatches reaching 17,899 units. Sales increased by 15.6 percent from 15,484 units in June 2025, giving the Dzire a 57.4 percent share of the mainstream sedan market.

The scale of that lead is clearer when the remaining models are combined. The other eight sedans in the sales table collectively recorded 13,284 units. The Dzire therefore outsold all of them together by 4,615 units.

Mainstream sedan sales increased by 10.1 percent year on year, from 28,335 units to 31,183 units. However, this was not a broad recovery spread evenly across the category. The Dzire alone added 2,415 units, accounting for nearly 85 percent of the sedan segment’s net increase of 2,848 units.

The Hyundai Aura retained second position with 5,977 units, up 10.4 percent from 5,413 units a year earlier. It secured a 19.2 percent share and remained the only sedan apart from the Dzire to cross 5,000 monthly units.

The Honda Amaze ranked third with 2,937 units. Its sales increased by 29.2 percent from 2,274 units in June 2025, making it the fastest growing model among the three volume leaders.

Together, the Dzire, Aura and Amaze accounted for 26,813 units, or almost 86 percent of the entire mainstream sedan tally. Adding the Tata Tigor’s 602 units takes the combined share of sub four metre sedans to approximately 88 percent.

This concentration shows that sedan demand has not disappeared completely. It has moved overwhelmingly towards smaller cars that qualify for the lower tax structure applicable to vehicles measuring less than four metres and using engines within the prescribed capacity limits.

maruti dzire tour s

The Dzire has an unusually wide customer base for a sedan. The regular model is sold to private buyers, while Maruti Suzuki also offers the Tour S for commercial and fleet operators. Monthly model figures can consequently reflect demand from family buyers, taxi operators, corporate fleets and institutional customers.

The current Dzire starts at approximately Rs 6.26 lakh, ex showroom. Petrol versions are available with a five-speed manual gearbox or an automated manual transmission, while factory fitted CNG versions are offered on selected variants.

Certified fuel efficiency is 24.79 kilometres per litre for the petrol manual and 25.71 kilometres per litre for the automated manual. The CNG version is rated at 33.73 kilometres per kilogram. These figures give the Dzire a running cost advantage that matters to both private owners with high monthly usage and commercial operators.

The latest generation also addressed one of the biggest weaknesses associated with earlier Maruti models. The Dzire received five stars for adult occupant protection and four stars for child occupant protection in Global NCAP testing. Six airbags, electronic stability control, ABS, brake assist and ISOFIX child seat mountings are standard across the range.

The model’s accumulated production crossed three million units in December 2024. That scale supports a large service network, strong parts availability and familiarity among independent repair workshops, all of which are relevant in the value focused sedan market.

volkswagen virtus

The Volkswagen Virtus remained the highest selling midsize sedan in June, but its sales fell by 32.8 percent to 1,195 units. It had recorded 1,778 units during the corresponding month last year.

The Skoda Slavia moved closer to the Virtus after recording 1,083 units, an increase of 20.9 percent from 896 units. The difference between the two Volkswagen Group sedans narrowed to only 112 units during the month.

Honda City sales stood at 745 units, up 5.1 percent from 709 units. The original claim that City sales remained flat was therefore not accurate, although its absolute volume remained low compared with its position in the market a decade ago.

The Hyundai Verna recorded the sharpest decline among the other midsize sedans. Its sales fell by 31.9 percent from 813 units to 554 units.

Combined sales of the Virtus, Slavia, City and Verna declined from 4,196 units in June 2025 to 3,577 units in June 2026. That represents a fall of approximately 14.8 percent and left the four models with only around 11.5 percent of mainstream sedan sales.

The Tata Tigor recorded 602 units, down 23.6 percent from 788 units in June 2025. Its 1.9 percent market share left it far behind the other sub four metre sedans despite being available with petrol, CNG and electric powertrain options across the wider Tigor range.

At the opposite end of the market, the Toyota Camry recorded 191 units, up 6.1 percent from 180 units. Its volume remained too small to materially influence the direction of the overall sedan category.

The top three compact sedans added a combined 3,642 units over their June 2025 total. Every other model in the table, taken together, lost 794 units. The gains from the Dzire, Aura and Amaze were therefore large enough to conceal the contraction across most of the remaining category.

That makes the June performance less a sedan revival and more a further concentration of demand around a few affordable models. The Dzire is not merely leading the category. Its volumes are now large enough to determine whether the entire sedan market reports growth or decline in a given month
