England: Thomas Tuchel must tread carefully after Jude Bellingham’s reaction as key to World Cup success emerges

England will face Argentina in the World Cup semi-finals this week, and it is crucial that any internal disagreements are ironed out before the match begins.

While Jude Bellingham’s sensational performance served as a warning to Argentina, the aftermath of England’s quarter-final victory also sounded an alarm for their head coach, Thomas Tuchel.

The humid, energy-sapping conditions at Miami Stadium tested Tuchel’s squad to the limit, yet they managed to battle past Erling Haaland’s Norway after 30 minutes of extra time. It was Bellingham who made the difference.

The midfielder netted both goals in England’s 2-1 win, which demanded deep reserves of determination. Despite the triumph, Tuchel’s frustration was evident at full-time.

Though England have now reached only their fourth World Cup semi-final in history, Tuchel openly stated that his players had “made life very, very difficult” for themselves, had been “sloppy,” and were ultimately “lucky” to progress. He voiced these views in immediate post-match interviews and repeated them to his players in the dressing room afterward.

However, Bellingham learned of his manager’s criticism during his own post-match interview, before Tuchel had personally addressed the team.

The quarter-final hero, Bellingham, raised his eyebrows and sighed before responding, “Yeah well, whatever. Whatever. It’s difficult out there. It’s a tough shift.”

Later, in another interview, he expanded on his thoughts: “Maybe he doesn’t know what it’s like to play in those kinds of conditions against Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa, Alexander Sorloth. That’s not an easy team to face. We’ve tried to create a positive environment. We should carry that into the final four. I can’t speak highly enough of the lads.”

It was a clear and confident rebuttal from England’s No10 — a right of reply to his manager’s remarks. Given the 32-degree heat and humidity that made it feel closer to 40 degrees, it’s understandable that Bellingham felt compelled to defend both himself and his teammates.

Tuchel must be cautious here.

While the German coach’s relentless pursuit of perfection — as Harry Kane himself described as “a good thing, in a way” — has elevated England’s standards, he risks unsettling his star player. The Football Association appointed Tuchel for his demanding nature, but alienating Bellingham, England’s standout performer at this World Cup, could be a costly error that jeopardises their campaign.

It is likely that any tension between the two will have been resolved swiftly, with all attention now turning to Wednesday’s semi-final against Argentina in Atlanta. Still, Tuchel must be mindful of the energy he projects. Maintaining his high standards is vital, but he must ensure Bellingham remains firmly in his corner.

England’s hopes increasingly appear tied to the partnership between Kane and Bellingham. Bellingham, already carrying immense responsibility as both playmaker and emotional leader, should not have to shoulder the additional burden of being the team’s constant motivator.

Tuchel and his assistant, Anthony Barry, have been forthright — sometimes brutally so — in their post-match evaluations throughout the tournament. While their honesty has driven performance improvements, Tuchel might have chosen to lead with praise after the draining Miami quarter-final, recognising the team’s resilience and the impact of his substitutes.

Reaching the latter stages of major tournaments is always arduous, especially under such extreme conditions. England have found ways to prevail through the leadership and brilliance of Kane and Bellingham. As they prepare to meet Argentina — the highest-ranked of the four remaining nations — unity, focus, and harmony within the squad will be more vital than ever. These are qualities Tuchel must carefully preserve if England are to realise their dream of World Cup glory.
