Cristo Fernandez, best known for portraying the ever-enthusiastic Dani Rojas in the acclaimed series Ted Lasso, has achieved a major personal milestone by making his professional football debut. Just two months after signing with El Paso Locomotive, the Mexican forward stepped onto the field for his first USL Championship appearance.

On Saturday night, life seemed to mirror fiction as Fernandez, recognised worldwide for his portrayal of the upbeat striker in the Apple TV+ series, took to the pitch in a competitive USL Cup fixture. The actor came on as a substitute in the 79th minute of El Paso Locomotive’s clash against New Mexico United.

Donning the No. 91 jersey, Fernandez made his long-awaited entrance into professional football. Though El Paso Locomotive suffered a 2-0 defeat, the occasion represented a significant personal triumph for the 35-year-old, marking his return to the professional sporting arena after years away.

Fernandez’s appearance was more than a cameo; it was a symbolic homecoming. The Guadalajara-born player had previously been part of the youth setup at Tecos, a former Liga MX club. However, recurring injuries in his early 20s forced him to switch paths, leading to his successful acting career. Despite the change, his passion for football never faded.

Determined to make a comeback, Fernandez began a rigorous physical and mental preparation process last year, working closely with performance coaches and specialists to regain his fitness. Earlier in 2026, he trained with the reserve team of Chicago Fire before ultimately impressing the technical staff at El Paso Locomotive and securing a professional contract.

For Fernandez, stepping onto the pitch once again was far more than a publicity move—it was a personal dream realised. Over the years, he has often spoken about his profound emotional connection with football, the very game that shaped both his life and his acting persona. Reflecting on his dual journey, Fernandez once said, “Football has given me both the best moments, the sad moments. I guess that’s why, for me, football is life.” His debut may have been brief, but it was eventful, as he managed to collect a yellow card during his late appearance.

After the final whistle, Fernandez expressed his gratitude to his supporters, acknowledging the significance of the moment. Despite the team’s defeat, he remained upbeat and thankful for the opportunity to play at a professional level once again. In a heartfelt note shared online, Fernandez wrote, “Thank you God, family, friends, my people. Let’s keep working hard.”

With his professional debut now complete, attention turns to whether Fernandez’s infectious energy—reminiscent of his on-screen alter ego—can help inspire El Paso Locomotive to greater success in the weeks ahead.
