The family conveyed the news in a statement published on the actor’s own Instagram page on Monday, July 13, 2026, describing his passing as sudden and unexpected. Throughout a career of more than fifty years, Neill became one of New Zealand’s very best exports, grabbing ardent praise when in Hollywood both in medium and small screen projects while continuing to stay close to home.

Sam Neill Passes Away At 78, Family Releases Official Statement 

The statement, posted using the Māori word “whānau” to refer to family and community, expressed immense sadness at sharing news of his passing. According to the family, Neill’s death came as a shock, even though he had recently been declared cancer-free following treatment for a rare and aggressive form of blood cancer. The statement noted that he was surrounded by family at the time and passed with the same dignity that had defined his life, while also thanking the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for their care.
