Morgan Rogers calls pre-World Cup debate over Jude Bellingham ‘ridiculous’ as England’s No.10 role sealed by six-goal superstar

Morgan Rogers has strongly criticised what he called the “ridiculous” pre-World Cup debate that questioned whether Jude Bellingham should retain his place in England’s starting eleven. The Real Madrid playmaker has been a standout performer for the Three Lions in North America, winning plaudits with a string of decisive performances under Thomas Tuchel.

Bellingham equals Maradona milestone in win over Norway

Jude Bellingham continued his dazzling form at the World Cup by scoring both goals in England’s 2-1 quarter-final triumph against Norway, equalling a 40-year-old record previously held by Diego Maradona. By netting a brace in consecutive knockout fixtures, the Real Madrid star matched the Argentine legend’s achievement from the 1986 tournament in Mexico.

The 23-year-old midfielder was instrumental in England’s comeback against a Norway side captained by Erling Haaland. Combining sharp finishing with commanding midfield play, Bellingham completed seven successful dribbles and drew several fouls, proving unstoppable as England booked their place in the semi-finals.

Rogers dismisses ‘ridiculous’ claims about Bellingham’s place

Despite being England’s leading scorer with six goals, Bellingham faced criticism from some quarters before the tournament began. Certain media outlets even proposed that Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers should replace him as the team’s No.10 — speculation that Rogers himself has firmly dismissed.

Speaking to FOX Sports after England’s win over Norway, Rogers made it clear that such suggestions were never credible. “Player of the tournament maybe? Erm... unbelievable. I think the thought of some people thinking he wasn't going to play in this tournament or he wasn't going to be involved is ridiculous,” he said, expressing clear frustration at the pre-tournament chatter.

A complete team player

Although much of the attention has focused on Bellingham’s goal-scoring heroics, Rogers was eager to highlight the midfielder’s tireless work ethic and physical contribution to the team’s overall effort.

“He's proven on the world stage time and time again how great a player he is. He’s put the work in, he’s stuck with us, and he’s got his rewards. He works so hard for the team, and not just with the goals, but if you look at him he’s completely drained at the end of every game because he gives his all, so he reaps the rewards. What a player and what a person, and yeah... we all love him,” Rogers added.

Looking ahead

England now prepare for the semi-finals with Bellingham firmly established as the creative heartbeat of the side. For Rogers and his teammates, the debate over who should command the attacking midfield role has been decisively settled on the pitch, leaving earlier critics with no ground to stand on.

Bellingham will look to continue his extraordinary run when England face Argentina on Wednesday for a spot in the World Cup final.
