Freddy Adu believes Arsenal prodigy Max Dowman could be England’s version of Lamine Yamal

Freddy Adu has shared his perspective on how Max Dowman might become for England what Lamine Yamal represents for Spain.

The former American footballer expressed his admiration for Dowman’s talent, as the Arsenal teenager continues his development under Mikel Arteta and aims for a future place in the England national team.

Dowman is already regarded as one of England’s brightest young prospects and is being carefully nurtured in London by Premier League-winning manager Arteta.

As England push toward a semi-final spot at the 2026 World Cup alongside Spain, Adu discussed the parallels he sees between Dowman and Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal.

Dowman enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Arsenal this season, contributing significantly as the club captured the Premier League title under Arteta’s leadership.

The 16-year-old, who became the youngest player ever to appear in the Premier League upon his debut, impressed against Everton at the Emirates Stadium late in the season, scoring a decisive goal following a dazzling solo run against the Toffees.

Adu, who was once dubbed ‘the next Pele’ and spent his career playing in the United States, Turkey, and France, stated that Dowman possesses qualities reminiscent of Yamal.

Speaking about the youngster, the 37-year-old said: “I do see the similarity between Dowman and Yamal. He’s brilliant at taking on defenders, cutting inside, and creating chances. He’s always a threat.”

Adu added: “Dowman still has a journey ahead, but if he’s given the right opportunities, I believe he can become for England what Yamal is for Spain. That’s the kind of player every team needs — one who’s dangerous in any area of the pitch, constantly creating problems and instilling fear in defenders.”

He continued: “I really hope England nurture his natural style, support him, and allow him to express himself. If they let him play his game, he’s destined to become a world-class player for England.”

Adu also compared Dowman’s body feints and dribbling ability to that of Lionel Messi, remarking: “You either have that instinct or you don’t. It’s not something you can learn later in your career.”

The Arsenal wonderkid will be eager to build upon his breakout 2025/26 season as Arteta aims to defend the Premier League crown in the 2026/27 campaign.

Although Dowman was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the 2026 World Cup, his progress leading up to the next major tournament is expected to be closely followed.

Adu made these remarks in an interview with FourFourTwo through Caesars Sportsbook Promo ahead of England’s World Cup encounter with Norway.
